Project – Breakdown on Existing Chiller/Temporary Chiller Replacement

Customer Requirement:

An essential requirement for cooling was needed by Gate Gourmet, a large catering company that supplies major airlines at Heathrow Airport. There was a York Absorber Chiller supplying the main building to keep the food preparation area at a preset temperature, the main chiller failed and the engineer on-site had announced that it would not be up and running until some major parts of the system were replaced. It would have been a breach of heath and safety for Gate Gourmet to have carried on with production; this situation had to be rectified quickly.

Carrier Rental Systems Solution:

The requirements of the building were assessed and Carrier Rental Systems solution was to provide a 600kW air cooled chiller. The benefit of this would give the customer 2 circuits and 2 Trane screw compressors; giving the ability to manage variable loads with minimum power input at part load. After looking at possible positions for the chillers we found an unused road near the plant room and ran 4” flexible hoses through to the plant room where we connected into the system using our purpose built Bauer to 4” PN16 flange adaptors. The chiller was lifted straight from the lorry onto the roadway using the vehicles own Hiab, our engineers set to work to commission the chiller as quickly as possible.

• Benefits to Customer – The customer was able to continue production for its major clients without incurring any penalties.
• Outcome – Carrier Rental Systems offered a solution, delivered, implemented and had the system up and running within 12 hours.
